WELCOME TO COOKING
UP READING
Our purpose in providing these tasty connections between books and food
is to help make reading fashionable and more memorable. Each recipe is
unique, many of them contributed by the authors of the books themselves.
We have tried to keep to simple recipes that don't require more than a
microwave, an electric skillet, a blender, a refrigerator, or a toaster
oven, but sometimes a recipe is just too wonderful to make it fit into
these constraints.
Most recipes require appliances you find in the ordinary teacher's lounge
(microwave, toaster oven, refrigerator) or which can be brought from home
(blender, crock pot, bread maker, electric fry pan). Many recipes could
be adapted to use mixes instead of the "from scratch"; recipes
with perfectly acceptable results. When you are outfitting your classroom
cooking center, try the thrift store first. Big bowls usually are 50¢,
measuring cups and spoons often are 10¢, baking pans that normally
would cost $10 are $1. Dishes, bowls, cups and serving implements are
similarly bargain priced. When you are planning
cooking activities, think collaboration. If the teacher is reading the
book to the kids, maybe the librarian will want to set up the ingredients.
If the cooking is taking place in the classroom, maybe another class would
like to share the results.
We hope you will find these titles and their accompanying recipes edifying
as well as edible! We can't vouch for results since many of the recipes
came from sources other than our own, but if you have suggestions on how
to improve a recipe, please contact us! If you would like specific recipes
on a disk, we can do that to make your life easier. The cost is $10 for
a CD or DVD.
